Background

Abstract is a B2B solution that helps legislators and lobbyists influence bills. While we offer bill tracking, we currently lack a key feature: the ability to generate and share bill reports. Adding this will complete our workflow and attract new customers.

Current Workflow

The current workflow using the "Report" feature on CapitolTrack, the report cannot be modified, instead users need to repeat the same flow daily generate new reports and constantly delete old reports.

Hypothesis

Offering organizing capabilities, partial automation, and live-sharing will enable users to complete their workflow entirely within Abstract. Success will be measured by an increase in active users.

Ideate

Given the uniqueness of this solution, we need to look outside of the GovTech field. I collaborated with the CPO to brainstorm ideas. We looked at other market-leading software to see how they help users stay organized.

Google Drive

  • Exceptional structure

  • Organizing features

  • Customizable file hierarchies.

Spotify Playlist

  • Personalized

  • Collaborative

  • Organized

Epiphany

What if bills are like songs, what if modifying and sharing a list of bills is as easy as editing and sharing a playlist?

Not Playlist, but Bill List

A new solution surfaced. Bill List, gives users a centralized library to create and share bill lists. Within each list, users can create automatic or manual groups.

Automatic Group

  • Functions like a “Saved Search”

  • Bills are that match with the preset filters/search query are automatically added

Manual Group

  • Allows bills to be added or removed manually

Final Deliverables

I handed off high-fidelity designs and prototypes, new/updated components, and recordings of complex flows. Conducted a QA session, and provided ongoing engineering support through implementation.

Take-aways

Innovation is key, but it’s equally important to balance with existing products that hold same principles that withstood the test of time.
